Electric vehicles are becoming a normal sight in Auckland driveways. And the first practical question most new EV owners ask is the same: can I charge this properly at home?

Yes — and you should. But it needs to be done right.

Here’s what’s actually involved in home EV charger installation in Auckland, from a Master Electrician’s perspective.

What type of home charger do you need?

There are two realistic options for home charging in New Zealand.

Standard 10A wall socket (Level 1)
Every EV can plug into a standard household outlet. It’s slow — you’ll gain roughly 10–15km of range per hour — but for light daily driving it’s often enough. No installation needed, but it puts sustained load on a circuit that isn’t designed for it long-term.

Dedicated wall-mounted EV charger (Level 2)
A dedicated 32A EV charger adds 40–80km of range per hour depending on your vehicle. This is what most Auckland homeowners end up installing once they’ve lived with a standard socket for a few weeks. If you’re driving regularly, Level 2 is the practical choice.

Does your switchboard need upgrading first?

This is the question most EV guides skip — and it’s the most important one for older Auckland homes.

A dedicated 32A EV charger circuit needs spare capacity in your switchboard. Many Auckland homes built before the 1990s have switchboards running close to their limit. Adding a high-draw EV circuit on top can cause nuisance tripping — or in older installations, create a genuine safety risk.

Before any installation, a licensed electrician should check:

  • Available capacity in your existing switchboard
  • Whether your main fuse can handle the additional load
  • Whether a switchboard upgrade is required first
  • The best cable route from switchboard to garage or driveway

Sorting this upfront avoids surprises on installation day.

Where should the charger go?

Most Auckland homeowners install their charger in the garage or on an exterior wall near the driveway.

Cable run length — the further the switchboard is from where you’re parking, the more cable and labour is involved. A garage directly below or beside the switchboard keeps costs down. Detached garages or long runs across a property add time and materials.

Weatherproofing — any exterior installation needs an IP-rated charger and proper conduit protection. Auckland’s humidity and rain make this non-negotiable, not optional.

Future-proofing — if there’s any chance of a second EV in future, it’s worth running a second conduit while the wall is open. The conduit itself is cheap; doing the job twice isn’t.

What does it cost in Auckland?

Costs vary depending on your switchboard, cable run length, and whether any upgrades are needed first.

Scenario Typical cost range
Straightforward install, modern switchboard, short cable run $800 – $1,400
Moderate cable run, minor switchboard work needed $1,200 – $2,000
Full switchboard upgrade required before install $2,500 – $4,500+

Who can legally install a home EV charger?

Only a licensed electrician. In New Zealand, all fixed wiring work — including a dedicated EV charger circuit — must be carried out by a registered electrician and signed off with a Certificate of Compliance (COC).

This isn’t just paperwork. EV chargers draw sustained high current for hours at a time. Poorly wired circuits are a fire risk. A Certified Master Electrician gives you confidence the work is done to the right standard — and the COC gives you proof of it.

At Northern Lights Lighting and Electrical, every installation is completed by a Certified Master Electrician, from switchboard assessment through to COC sign-off.

Common questions

How long does installation take?
A straightforward installation typically takes 2–4 hours. If switchboard work is required first, allow a full day.

Do I need to buy a charger before calling you?
No — we’re happy to advise on what suits your vehicle and property before you purchase anything.

Will my power bill increase much?
Charging a typical EV from near-empty costs roughly $3–6 depending on your electricity rate. Most Auckland homeowners find they’re well ahead compared to petrol costs even after the power bill increase.

Can I install a charger in a rental?
Yes, with your landlord’s consent. Many landlords are open to it — an EV charger is a genuine property feature. We can work with you and your landlord to find the right approach.
