FAQs
Emergency Lighting Auckland FAQs
Is emergency lighting a legal requirement in NZ?
−
Yes — emergency lighting is required under the New Zealand Building Code for all commercial premises. Buildings with emergency lighting systems are required to maintain them as a specified system under their Building Warrant of Fitness, with annual IQP inspections and compliance reporting.
What is an IQP and why do I need one?
+
An Independent Qualified Person (IQP) is certified to inspect and report on specified systems in commercial buildings — including emergency lighting. Your BWOF cannot be issued without a current IQP inspection report. Northern Lights Lighting and Electrical holds IQP certification for emergency lighting.
How often does emergency lighting need to be tested?
+
Emergency lighting systems must be tested and inspected annually by a certified IQP as part of your BWOF obligations. Monthly and six-monthly functional tests are also required — we can include these in an ongoing maintenance programme.
What happens if my emergency lighting fails an inspection?
+
We'll identify the specific failures and carry out the necessary repairs or replacements to bring the system into compliance. We can usually complete remediation and re-inspection in a single visit.
Can you install emergency lighting in an existing building?
+
Yes — we regularly retrofit emergency lighting into existing commercial premises. We'll assess your building layout and design a compliant system that integrates with your existing electrical infrastructure.
