A home security alarm is one of those purchases where the sales process often moves faster than the thinking process. Here’s what to understand before you commit to anything.
What types of home security systems are available?
Monitored alarm systems
The alarm is connected to a monitoring centre that responds when triggered — typically dispatching a security guard or notifying police. Monthly monitoring fees apply, typically $30–$60 per month in Auckland. These provide the strongest deterrent and fastest response, but ongoing costs add up.
Unmonitored (self-monitored) systems
When triggered, the alarm sounds and sends a notification to your phone. No monthly fees. Response depends on you or a neighbour acting on the alert. Increasingly popular with Auckland homeowners who want control without ongoing costs.
CCTV and video doorbells
Not a traditional alarm, but often installed alongside one. Cameras deter opportunistic burglars and provide footage if an incident occurs.
Intercom and gate control systems
Relevant for properties with gates or multiple entry points. Video intercom systems allow you to screen visitors and control access without opening the door.
Northern Lights Lighting and Electrical installs all of these — and can combine them into a single integrated system if needed.
What does a proper security alarm installation involve?
A professionally installed system is significantly more reliable than a DIY setup. A licensed electrician will:
- Assess your property’s entry points, blind spots, and existing wiring
- Recommend the right sensor placement for coverage without false alarms
- Hard-wire sensors and the control panel where possible
- Connect to your home’s power supply with battery backup
- Commission and test the full system before handover
- Brief you on how to use and arm/disarm it correctly
A poorly placed or poorly installed system is worse than no system — false alarms erode confidence and lead people to ignore genuine alerts.
What should you ask before committing to a system?
Is it hard-wired or wireless?
Hard-wired systems are more reliable and don’t depend on battery life in individual sensors. Wireless is easier to retrofit in existing homes but requires ongoing battery maintenance.
What’s the monitoring contract?
If you’re opting for monitoring, check the contract length. Some Auckland providers lock you into 24–36 month contracts. Understand what you’re committing to.
Who installs it?
Some security companies use their own installation teams, others subcontract. Asking for a licensed electrician to do the wiring is reasonable — it’s electrical work.
What happens if we sell the house?
A hard-wired system adds value to the property and can be transferred to new owners. Confirm whether the monitoring contract is transferable or needs to be cancelled.
What does home security alarm installation cost in Auckland?
| System type | Typical installed cost |
|---|---|
| Basic alarm with 3–4 sensors, no monitoring | $800 – $1,500 |
| Full system with multiple sensors, siren, keypad | $1,500 – $3,000 |
| Full system with CCTV (4 cameras) | $2,500 – $5,000 |
| Intercom and gate control | $1,500 – $4,000 |
These are installation costs only — monitoring fees are separate and ongoing.
Common questions
Do I need a permit for a home security system?
No building consent is required for standard alarm and camera installations. All electrical wiring must be carried out by a licensed electrician.
Will a security alarm lower my home insurance premium?
Often yes — many Auckland insurers offer discounts for monitored alarm systems. Ask your insurer before choosing a system type.
Can existing wiring be reused if I’m upgrading an old system?
Sometimes. We’ll assess the existing cabling during the quoting visit and advise whether it’s suitable for reuse or needs replacing.
